DISMISS GUILT AS CULTURAL

The most convenient escape in a confused society is to glibly brush aside guilt as a cultural appendage. Such an academic dismissal of moral reality fails to take into account that even when we differ culturally from one another in our behavior, the reasons that justify that behavior are often the same. In other words, there are some metaethical similarities.

Take the classic example of killing a child. Even the merciless killing of children to avenge some wrong is done because the one seeking vengeance chooses to hurt his or her enemy in the worst way by taking that which is most precious to him. In other words, the child was killed, not because its life was worthless, but because the child’s life was esteemed to be of greatest value. (The very establishment of law and order in any community is because of the realization that without law and order plunder and savagery prevail.)

The problem with dismissing all guilt as cultural is that morality becomes untenable. No one can honestly be willing to concede to that position for to do so would be self-defeating.
